Apache 2.0: A Licence Rooted in the Human Joy of Sharing Knowledge

At Aberdeen Dream.scot CIC, we believe that sharing knowledge is a fundamental human instinct—one that drives progress, fosters connection, and empowers communities. The Apache License 2.0 embodies this spirit by removing barriers to collaboration, ensuring that technology remains a tool for collective growth rather than exclusion.

Why Apache 2.0 Reflects Human Nature

  1. The Joy of Sharing Humans have always found fulfilment in passing on knowledge, skills, and tools to others. Apache 2.0 enables this by allowing free use, modification, and distribution of software, turning code into a shared resource rather than a guarded secret.
  2. Freedom to Innovate Just as humans naturally build upon the ideas of those who came before, Apache 2.0 encourages innovation by letting developers adapt and improve software without legal restrictions. This mirrors the way culture, science, and art have always evolved—through collaboration.
  3. Inclusivity and Accessibility The licence ensures that no one is left behind. By prohibiting discrimination based on identity or purpose (Section 6), it aligns with the humanistic belief that knowledge should be available to all, not just those who can afford it.
  4. Respect for Contributors Apache 2.0 requires attribution (Section 6), acknowledging the effort and creativity of those who contribute. This reflects the human value of gratitude and recognition—a cornerstone of trust and community.

A Licence for a Connected World

In a time when technology can either divide or unite, Apache 2.0 chooses the latter. It supports projects that:

  • Educate (open-source learning tools).
  • Heal (medical data platforms).
  • Empower (privacy and accessibility tools).

By removing restrictions, it lets curiosity, creativity, and cooperation thrive—qualities that define us as humans.

A Call to Ethical Action

While Apache 2.0 is permissive, we at Aberdeen Dream.scot CIC believe in going further. Knowledge should not only be free but also used for good. That’s why we encourage adding ethical guidelines to ensure technology serves humanity, not the other way around.

Because in the end, the greatest human joy comes not from hoarding knowledge—but from sharing it.

Project Title: Urban Drone Maintenance & Multi-Purpose Solutions

Background

A few years ago, the facade of a single building in Aberdeen was cleaned at a cost of £1 million. This highlights the need for more efficient and affordable solutions to maintain our city’s urban landscape without compromising development or employment opportunities.

Project Overview

Our project aims to develop and deploy a fleet of tethered drones equipped with advanced cleaning, painting, and sensing technologies. These drones will be designed to withstand Scotland’s weather conditions, ensuring long-term stability and reliability.

Key Features & Applications

  1. Urban Facade Cleaning & Maintenance
    • Tethered drones will clean building facades efficiently, reducing costs and manual labor.
    • Automated systems will ensure consistent results across multiple buildings.
    • Drones can reach hard-to-access areas safely and efficiently.
  2. Emergency Response & Search & Rescue (SAR)
    • Drones equipped with thermal cameras and other sensors can locate missing persons in emergencies or during SAR operations.
    • Tethered drones can provide persistent aerial surveillance for firefighting operations, reducing response times and improving safety.
  3. Transport & Delivery
    • Lightweight cargo drones can transport goods between designated pickup and delivery points within the city.
    • This can help reduce traffic congestion and emissions while providing an efficient alternative to traditional transportation methods.

Project Timeline

  1. Research & Development (6 months)
    • Study Aberdeen’s building structures, weather conditions, and safety regulations.
    • Develop drone designs and testing prototypes.
    • Integrate advanced technologies for cleaning, painting, sensing, and cargo transport.
  2. Pilot Projects (1 year)
    • Deploy drones in select areas of the city to test their performance and gather public feedback.
    • Monitor and analyze data to optimize drone operation and maintenance strategies.
  3. Expansion & Rollout (Ongoing)
    • Based on pilot project results, scale up drone fleet and expand services across Aberdeen.
    • Continuously update and improve drone technologies to meet evolving urban needs.

By investing in this innovative project, Aberdeen can lead the way in sustainable, efficient, and multi-purpose urban drone solutions. This will not only refresh our cityscape but also enhance safety, reduce costs, and create new employment opportunities in the drone industry.
